Tata Mumbai Marathon is in January 2027. That sounds far away. It is not.
Between now and race day there are roughly 28 usable training weeks after you subtract taper, travel, the monsoon's worst moods and the two colds I will definitely catch. A marathon build spends that budget backwards from the start line. This post is the plan for the first spend: the base block.
The point of base
Base training has one job: make the body boring. Predictable heart rate at predictable paces, tendons that don't file complaints, a weekly structure so routine it stops being a decision.
No workout in this block is impressive. That's the design. You cannot race off a base block — but you cannot survive the real block without one.
A week in the block
| Day | Session | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Rest / mobility | The most skipped, most important line |
| Tue | Easy 10K | Aerobic volume, conversational pace |
| Wed | Strength + short easy run | Hyrox debts coming due |
| Thu | Easy 8K + strides | Turnover without the cost |
| Fri | Rest | Sleep is training |
| Sat | Long run, building 22 → 30K | The main event |
| Sun | Recovery 6K, embarrassingly slow | Blood flow, ego management |
The long run grows a couple of kilometres every second week, then steps back. Everything else just repeats. The magic is that there is no magic.
Base block, Pune edition
Monsoon complicates the spreadsheet. Some mornings the "easy 10K" is sheets of rain and a decision: treadmill, soaked loop, or swap days. The rule I've settled on: volume is negotiable within the week, never across weeks. A washed-out Tuesday can move to Wednesday; it cannot quietly disappear.
Humidity also rewrites pace math. Easy pace in 90% humidity is minutes slower than easy pace in December, and pretending otherwise is how a base block becomes an injury block. Heart rate keeps me honest when the watch's pace field starts lying about my fitness.
Rules I'm holding myself to
- Easy means easy. If I can't hold a conversation, it's not an easy run — it's a slow tempo and a stolen recovery day.
- No borrowing from race pace. June fitness spent on impressive-looking splits is January fitness that doesn't exist.
- Log everything. Every kilometre goes to Strava and every sensation goes in this log. Race-week me will want the receipts.
The engineering parallel, because there's always one
A base block is platform work. Nobody applauds a week of easy 10Ks, for the same reason nobody applauds the migration that makes next quarter's features possible. You do it because future-you is the customer.
Marine Drive at sunrise is 28 weeks of boring away. Time to be boring on purpose.
